How to Fire Up for a Great Barbecue! Royal Oak Briquets are quality formulated to start fast and produce a long-lasting, even heat. Here's how to start a charcoal fire like a barbecue expert: 1. Arrange briquets in a pile. 2. Apply starter fluid over the charcoal, use 1.6 fluid ounces (47 milliliters) per pound of charcoal. Light the charcoal immediately. The starter fluid will burn off cleanly in a few minutes leaving the charcoal fully ingnited. 3. In approximately 10-15 minutes, or when briquets are predominately ashed over, spread briquets evenly. Wait 5 minutes and begin to cooking.
