Preparation & Usage

Directions Instructions: Spread Lake Shore Ice Melt lightly and evenly over icy surfaces (if the snow is more than 2 inches deep, plow or shovel it first, then apply Lake Shore Ice Melt to melt the remaining snow or ice). Sprinkle 1/4 to 1/2 cup (2-4 oz. ) per square yard. Do Not Over Apply. As the ice and snow melt, remove the slush and water immediately to prevent the surface from refreezing. Big storm on the way? As it snows, spread Lake Shore Ice Melt on the areas you intend to clear once the storm stops. This will make shoveling easier and help prevent ice formation. Notice: Use rubber gloves, a spreader or a scoop to spread Lake Shore Ice Melt lightly and evenly over ice and snow covered surfaces. Independent laboratory testing shows that the components of Lake Shore Ice Melt do not o chemically attack good quality concrete that has been designed for exposure to winter weather and deicer usage. However, the natural cycle of freezing and thawing of ice on concrete by winter weather conditions can cause scaling damage to concrete. The use of any ice melting agent can increase the number of freeze thaw cycles to which concrete can be subjected. Particularly vulnerable are those concrete surfaces in which substandard practices were used in the formulation, pouring, finishing, and/or curing stages of construction. Also vulnerable is all concrete that is less than two (2) years old, pre-cast steps, masonry (stone or brick), existing concrete that has exposed aggregate, is pre-cast, pre-stressed, chipped, cracked, spalled, or weathered. The use of any deicer on these types of surfaces is not recommended, and therefore, can only be done at the user's own risk. To minimize potential damage, use this, and any other deicing product, on only "quality concrete" that is air-entrained, mixed, placed, and cured according to recommendations of the American Concrete Institute Committee 201. The potential for damage to concrete surfaces can also be decreased by sealing surfaces and removing slush that results from the melting process. Lake Shore Ice Melt contains calcium chloride, with hygroscopic (water-attracting) properties. If it is allowed to remain on floor coverings, it may cause a damp or wet area which may contribute to floor coverings damage, as any continued wetness could. Therefore, the use of outside and inside "wipe-off" mats is recommended for optimum safety and minimal impact on floor coverings. All deicers can be harmful when applied directly to trees, shrubs, flower beds or grass. Remove any melted ice, snow and slush away from vegetation areas. Ice melting agents applied at much greater rates than recommended may interfere with traction and footing.
