Why is it important to get a flu shot every year?
Influenza vaccine is given each year because immunity decreases after a year and because influenza vaccine viruses are updated almost every year. Annual vaccination is recommended even if the strains included in the vaccine are not changed from one year to the next.
Will a flu (influenza) shot protect me from COVID-19?
Flu vaccines will not prevent COVID-19, but they will reduce the burden of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths on the health care system and conserve scarce medical resources for the care of people with COVID-19. The reverse is also true as a COVID-19 vaccine will not protect you from being infected with the flu virus.
Who should get a flu shot?
Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for all people ages 6 months and older who do not have a contraindication to the vaccine.
What should I expect after my flu shot?
Influenza vaccine is very safe. The most common side effects of the injectable (inactivated) influenza vaccine include soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of the injection. Less than 1% of vaccine recipients develop symptoms such as fever, chills, and muscle aches for 1 to 2 days following the vaccination. Experiencing these non-specific side effects does not mean that you are getting influenza. The flu shot cannot give you the flu.
Remember this flu season is more important than ever to ensure you cover all bases. Seasonal flu vaccine as well as COVID-19 vaccine continue to be your best protection against these viruses.
